2. Get some good materials to help you working on your seo - find some good resources, free or paid (doesn’t matter as long as they help you). A good free “resources center” it’s forums.digitalpoint.com. I learned a lot of things from there.

3. Make sure your website isn’t a total mess - it has to be easy to read and crawl by the search engine robots. So you have to make sure you are using new technologies like CSS or web 2.0 features, sitemaps, etc

4. Link building - as you were able to see in one of my previous posts, search engines see the internet like a voting community. If many websites “vote” for you (link to you) then your ranking goes up. Of course, not any kind of websites, they have to be good websites as well. For instance, if porn/warez sites point to you google won’t look at you with good eyes So try to get as many links as you can .. from trusted websites.

5. Use the KISS methods - KISS means “keep it simple, stupid” (no offence, by the way). Your website MUST be clean. And I don’t mean the colors and layouts and so on, I mean it has to have a clear navigation menu (a small copy at the bottom of the page would help as well) that will help crawlers to understand your website better.. and don’t worry, many people like clean menus too.

6. Sitemap - as I said before, sitemap is a must too. You need to have that. And make sure you don’t have broken links in it! (to be applied for point 5 too)

7. Background - a lot of things happen there. And I dont mean the php scripts you might be using or the html tags. I mean the box your website stays on. Yes, the box(server). Think of what can happen if your server is a shared one and hosts porn sites too … Cheap/Free hosting companies do that. And there are many factors you should be aware of, like redirections, banners which search engines don’t like to see on our webpages.

8. Track your results - use google analytics or any other program you know and you like to check how much traffic the search engines are sending you and especially from which keywords ( if it’s the kw you chosed, then you’re on the right track … )

9. Submit your website to search engines - most of them have forms where you can tell who you are. Don’t let the search engines find you, you go directly to them and put there the right info.

10. Repeat 1 to 9 until you get the desired results - Keep doing those things and especially improve your website content. Content is the most important for a website. The more content you have the more points you’ll get. And make sure you make changes often, so it doesn’t look like you’ve put a website online and forgot about it, but you’re active and taking care of it.

There are two basic reasons to submit a web site or web page to a search engine. The first reason would be to add an entirely new web site because the site operators would rather not wait for a search engine to discover them. The second reason is to have a web page or web site updated in the respective search engine.

How web sites are submitted?

There are two basic methods still in use today that would allow a webmaster to submit their site to a search engine. They can either submit just one web page at a time, or they can submit their entire site at one time with a sitemap. However, all that a webmaster really needs to do is to submit just the home page of a web site. With just the home page, most search engines are able to crawl a site, provided that it is well designed.

Web sites desire to be listed in popular search engines because that is how most people access web sites.  People like to search for information on the web at what is known as a search engine. Sites that appear on the first page of a search are said to be in the top 10. Clicking on a hyperlink causes the found web page to appear in the searchers web browser.

Thus, webmasters often highly desire that their sites appear in the top 10 in a search engine search. This is because searchers are not very likely to look over more than one page of search results, known as a SERPs.

In order to obtain good placement on search results in the various engines, webmasters must optimize their web pages. The process is called search engine optimization. Many variables come into play, such as the placement and density of desirable keywords, the hierarchy structure of web pages employed in a web site (i.e., How many clicks from the home page are required to access a particular web page?) , and the number of web pages that link to a given web page. The Google search engine also uses a concept called page rank.

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at considerably more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; for example, it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.” Using these and other factors, Google provides its views on pages’ relative importance

Meta tags are hidden tags included inside the part of your website. If you don’t know what that is, your webmaster will know for sure. Meta tags are there (or should be) to supply the web page with additional information regarding its content. When search engine robots analyse your page, they first look at your meta tags and then compares it to the rest of the content (using very complex algorithms). I must tell you, meta tags are very important, but they won’t boost your page rank! There are many other thins taken into consideration by robots.

A meta tag has few attributes, some required, some optional. “Content” is a must. You have to include it and set a value for it. The optional ones are “http-equiv”, “name” and “scheme”.

Now.. Let’s say we’re selling shoes. Here are few examples and usage. The name might take multiple values:

1. keywords - with this you specify for which (main) keywords your site will “compete” in search queries with other websites.
Example: . This will help us get higher in the search results page when keywords like “shoes” or “men shoes” or “women shoes” are entered in the search query. Of course, these are our main keywords, but with a big pagerank we can appear in a good position for many other searches related to “shoes”.
2. description - few words/sentences about your website

3. author - who created the page

4. robots - to allow or disallow indexing by robots

5. copyright - the copyright date of the page

Also, very very important is the title of the page. Have a good and relevant title for your page.

To conclude, if you want to get higher in search engine results, focus on title+meta tags (especially keywords and description) and of course … content.

In this post we’ll focus on pay per click on search engines.

How does this work? It’s simple. When someone searches for something, let’s say shoes in google.com, near the regular results that match the search query, there are few additional links, called “sponsored links”. They appear next to or above the regular(or natural/organic) results in the search results page, or somewhere in the content area, for the content network(for instance at the bottom of a page).

As you probably already guessed, Google is the biggest in this field too and there are few other like yahoo, msn, adbrite, etc. The minimum you have to pay for a specific keyword depends very much on that keyword, on how many other advertisers bid for it, on your relevancy for that kw (and many more). The more a keyword is searched by advertisers, the more money you will have to pay to get on top. Minimum CPC (cost per click) can be from $0.01 to few bucks.

There are 2 main categories for PPC: one is keyword match (used in search networks, like for instance www.google.com) and content match (ads in content match campaigns appear on sites with good relevancy for those specific terms. EG: if I sell shoes and offer a space for ads to appear, google will show ads like “Buy shoes today” or “John’s shoes shop” etc).

The algorithms used by search engines to display the ads in a specific order are very complex and rely on many many factors. For instance, even though your PPC campaign optimized and relevant for a set of keywords, you might need to pay even $2 or more for a click to appear on the first page of results. Or, even though the competition is very low on a keyword, your scoring can be so bad so Google might ask you $10 for a click.

The key for a successful campaign is low competition (duh!) and good relevancy! … and good search traffic estimation for a keyword (let’s say you pick the kws “banana shake winter Romania tiger” - your competition will be so low you will pay $.01 for a click…. but nobody will reach your website because nobody searches for that kw or phrase). After that, you are ready for optimizing .. and here’s where everything starts

Today’s subject is search trends and how you can use article writing to drive some quick traffic to your website.

All of you know what Google trends serves for and what you can do with it. If you don’t know that, you can go and do some research to find out more. Basically, google trends is a database of reports and it’s based on user queries over a given period of time. So, let’s say you were interested in how many searches are made monthly on the keyword “article marketing”.  You simply go to google trends and find that out. Don’t expect to see numbers there. They only give you enough information to make an idea and be able to check its flow, if it’s searched more or less than in the past. If you still need to know some numbers, you can use the keyword tool. It can be found in the adwords system (provided by google as well) and it will give you an approximate number for the searches that are being made for a given keyword, say “article marketing” in our case.

Ok, let’s say we have some numbers now and for the keyword “article marketing” there are 100 people searching each day, so, basically, 100 people seeing the first results page.

Here’s what you need to do: you need to get there, on the first page!

How can you do that ?

It’s a pretty simple process.

What you need to do is to write a good article related to that topic. And it must be optimized for that keyword (if you don’t know what SEO is, do some google searches and you will find enough articles to explain you how to play with keywords density and so on). When you’re finished writing and optimizing, post that article on your website’s blog. If you don’t have one, setup one (on your website or on a hosted platform like blogspot.com).

The next thing you need to do is let others know you have posted that article. One thing to consider is pinging specialized blog update services on the www, but that’s done automatically by default by wordpress (if you choose to run your blog with wordpress) so no much to do on that. Other thing to consider, and here’s where I wanted to bring you, is letting social bookmarking sites know about your article.

Let’s pick digg.com for this example. Digg has a good ranking on the web, so it would help you for sure. You now need to go to digg.com and submit your article/story. If you don’t have an account with digg I suggest you create one right now.

“Tadaaaaa”

Yup, this is it. There’s nothing else to do now but wait. Google will go and index digg in the near future and find your article in, and, hopefully, if your article is well optimized, your headline will be placed on a good spot in google serps.

Now the 100 people searching for “article marketing” each day will see your post and might click on it and get on your website.

That’s what I call quick traffic.

Every day we hear about it … at least on this website

Well, I personally think it’s very important in your SEO adventure, no matter what kind of submission you talk about. And here we can include “search engine submission”, “directory submission”, “article submission”, “rss submission”, “blog comments submission”, “social bookmarking”. Yep, all of them rely on the process of submission. In this post we’ll talk about one of them, say … “blog comment submission”.

First, what does it include?

It’s the process in which you go on other people’s blogs, read them and post a comment, including your details. Of course, I’m talking about blogs related to a specific blog. If you like soccer and your website is about soccer it makes no sense to mess with fishing blogs.

Ok, now we have a topic too. It’s “soccer”. And let’s say we have a website as well.

Why post comments on other people blogs ?

Well.. it’s simple. Because the search engines are looking at this whole world wide web like at a voting system. The more websites point to you, the better. And, of course, the topic of those websites and their rank count A LOT in this voting process.

Where do I get those blogs from ?

It’s easy. Just go to Google’s blogsearch service (search google for “blogsearch” to find it), enter your best keywords and hit search. You’ll then get yourself a bunch of related blogs… Or at least blogs that Google finds related.

Ok, the easy part is gone, now it’s time to get to work … I suggest you use firefox when doing this. Here’s what I suggest: have a main tab open with the google search results and then every time when you want to open a website, right click on it and select “open in new tab”. This will help you keep track of what websites you’ve been on and don’t lose your current work. You can open as many tabs as you want/need and browse those websites. When you find a post that seems interesting, scroll all the way to the bottom and you will see the comment feature. Enter there your name, your email, your website url (it says it’s optional, but it’s a MUST), your comment and hit submit. That’s it. You then have to wait for it to be approved by an admin and after that happens you will have another website mentioning about you and linking to you.

Now, some websites have the no-follow tag activated, which means crawlers won’t consider it as link to you and won’t index your page after they index that blog. However, this isn’t so bad as it will at least find out you exist and it will come to you sometime. And maybe you will get some free traffic from that as well. So, even if the blog won’t link to you, you might get some hits and, why not .. some new potential customers for your business.

How to track results ?

Once in a while (every few days) go check google for links to you. Open google.com and type: “links: domain.com” where domain.com is your domain (duuh).
